Societal values (e.g. sustainability, privacy, fairness) are key to the design and deployment of
technologies. The use of machine learning techniques can significantly improve assessments of
how values are addressed for specific technologies.

At the Energy Transition Lab and the section of Ethics/Philosophy of Technology (TPM), we are
developing a text-mining tool to trace societal values in text corpora (
This tool is based on topic modelling and can capture documents addressing values, even if these
values are not explicitly mentioned.

The tool has already been used for several scientific publications and policy reports. We are now
looking for Student Assistants to develop the tool further. Tasks include helping to improve
code speed, exploring methods to evaluate the quality of topics, improving existing
visualisations, etc.

We are looking for Students Assistants with Python programming skills. Some experience with
text mining is beneficial but not compulsory. We would ask for 6-8 hours of work per week on
average, but the number of hours may vary per week depending on the availability of students.
Ideally, students would start in September / October. Remuneration is according to the
Collective Labour Agreement of TU Delft.
